Russia denies arming Syrian regime
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov is denying claims made by the U.S. State Department that Moscow is supplying Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime with attack helicopters. Instead, Lavrov asserted, it is the U.S. that's arming Syrian rebels — which the White House says is not true: "We do not and have not supplied weapons to the Syrian opposition," said Obama spokesman Jay Carney. According to Russian news agencies, Lavrov says that Moscow is completing earlier weapons contracts with Syria exclusively for air-defense systems.
