n 1983, Sally Ride became a household name as the first American woman to go into space. While sudden fame was hard on the shy Californian, she used her celebrity for good, inspiring generations of young girls and women. Ride died July 23 at the age of 61 after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Here a look back at her infamous first journey and the influential career that followed.
