Clashes erupt in Iran over currency plunge

olice in Tehran on Wednesday cracked down on a central black market for foreign currency, sparking clashes with money changers. It is the first time that violence has spilled onto the streets since the Iranian currency, the rial, began plummeting this week, which prompted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to publicly ask Iranian citizens not to exchange rials for other currencies. Analysts say the rial's dwindling value is some of the starkest evidence to date that Western economic sanctions against the Iranian regime are taking their toll.
