he news: All the football fans, put your hands up. Beyonce Knowles will be the headline performer at Super Bowl XLVII's halftime show in New Orleans, reports the Associated Press. Though the official announcement won't be made until Wednesday, commentators are already weighing in on the whether or not the "Crazy in Love" singer is a good choice for the Feb. 3, 2013 telecast, which is likely to be watched by more than 100 million people. (February's Giants-Patriots thriller, featuring a halftime show starring Madonna, set an all-time ratings record of 111.3 million.) Is Beyonce the right performer for the high-profile halftime gig?
The reaction: As "one of the very few true superstars who reaches audiences of all races, ages, and sexual orientations," Beyonce is a perfect fit for the halftime show, says Cyd Zeigler Jr. at Outsports. Of course, Beyonce "is an obvious and excellent choice," agrees Matthew Perpetua at BuzzFeed, though she's also a bit of an outlier. Recent performers, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Paul McCartney, have typically been older classic rockers. Still, "there's a short list of superstars who have the mainstream appeal and stage chops to anchor such a gig," and Beyonce is clearly on it, says John Jurgensen at The Wall Street Journal.
