March 13
On this day. 1868: The Senate impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson began. The House of Representatives had already impeached the president on 11 counts of trying to fire War Secretary Edwin Stanton and for violating post-war Reconstruction Acts. After a dramatic two-month Senate trial, Johnson was acquitted by a single vote. Bill Clinton is the only other president to have been impeached.
On this day. 1901: Benjamin Harrison died. He was the 23rd president, serving between 1889-93. Harrison was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the only presidential grandfather-grandson combination.
Quote of the day
"We Americans have no commission from God to police the world." –Benjamin Harrison
