1. Katee Sackhoff might star in a Marvel superhero movie
Today in better late than never: After two Thor movies, two Captain America movies, and three Iron Man movies, Marvel is finally starting to entertain the idea of a female-led superhero franchise. In a recent interview, director Louis D'Esposito floated the possibility of a movie centered on one of the company's "strong female characters," citing Captain Marvel as one possibility. The news comes, intriguingly, alongside Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff's admission that Marvel had been doing "a lot of checking of [her] availability" in the first part of 2014. Of course, there's nothing that officially connects Sackhoff to a Captain Marvel movie. But what's a superhero casting report without a bunch of vaguely plausible speculation? [SlashFilm]

2. Hugh Jackman thinks Ben Affleck will make a great Batman
Who says rival superheroes can't be friends? In a recent interview with MTV News, Hugh Jackman was asked how he felt about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman, because everyone is legally required to have an opinion about that now. And Jackman gave Affleck a big thumbs up. "I think Ben is a great actor," said Jackman. "I think he's been underrated for a long time." He added, "I have no doubt he's going to crush it," thereby giving comic book fans enough fuel for a decades' worth of X-Men/Batman crossover fan fiction. [MTV News]

3. Miley Cyrus' next single will be called "Wrecking Ball"
The furor around Miley Cyrus' twerk routine at the VMAs has finally died down, which means she has to think of some other way to keep everyone inexplicably obsessed with her. Her solution? The announcement that her new single, "Wrecking Ball," will be released on Monday. The song comes from her upcoming album Bangerz, proving that her choice in album titles is just as subtle as her choice in dance routines. [USA Today]

4. Tom Hiddleston will replace Benedict Cumberbatch in Crimson Peak
What do you do when an actor beloved by everybody on the internet drops out of your movie? Cast that other actor beloved by everybody on the internet to take his place. Just a few weeks after Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Crimson Peak, Tom Hiddleston — who's best known as the villainous Loki from The Avengers — has been cast as his replacement. Let's hope that Hiddleton sticks with the role — if he drops out, Matthew Goode is the only charming/creepy British guy Hollywood has left. [The Hollywood Reporter]

5. One Direction's next album will be called Midnight Memories
If you somehow missed all the excited preteen squeals from today, allow us to break a major piece of news: One Direction's third album, which is scheduled for release on November 25, will be called Midnight Memories. Though the band is best known for its bubblegum tween pop, band member Liam Payne warned that the album eschews One Direction's normal style for an edgier "rock direction" — which fails to explain why its title sounds like a cross between a Halloween party theme and the name of a high school goth band.
