Tip of the week: Organic shopping

Four ways to shop organically and affordably.

Look to chain stores. Even such large discount chains as Costco, Wal-Mart, and Sam’s Club now carry organic products. They “claim” to be cheaper; just do a price check before purchasing.

Clip virtual coupons. Many “major organic brands,” including Annie’s Homegrown, Organic Valley, and Stonyfield Farm, provide coupons on their homepages.

Go generic. Stores such as Whole Foods, Safeway, and Kroger offer their own generic versions of organic products. Stock up on “organic rice, flour, beans, granola, nuts, pasta, and peanut butter.”

Shop seasonally. When fruits and vegetables are in season, their “prices are lowest.” At Sustainabletable.org/shop/eatseasonal you can search by state and look up what produce to buy and when.
