Helen Mirren’s date rape controversy
Were the actress' comments about rape irresponsible?

I feel terrible for actress Helen Mirren, said Julie Bindel in a Guardian blog, who recently revealed that she had been date raped a couple times when she was younger. But it makes me “very, very angry” that she believes a woman doesn’t have the right to prosecute a man if he forces sex on her while on a date, seemingly as long as she’s “not left bleeding and injured.”

“Hallelujah” for Helen Mirren! said Sue Carroll in the Mirror.co.uk. Finally, “someone with the balls to take on the army of hard-line feminists determined to make men culpable every time a woman embarks on an ill-advised sexual encounter.”

It’s possible that Mirren “deliberately wandered into a political minefield out of a conviction that the pendulum has swung too far on the issue,” said Paul Vallely in The Independent. But there’s also a chance that she was caught off guard during the interview, and “didn’t quite know what she was doing.”
