Tip of the week: How to discover an antique’s value
Finding out the worth of an antique

Surf the net. These days people turn to the Web to sell even the most precious antiques. “Search to see what your items are selling for at online dealers and on eBay.” Another helpful site is Kovels.com, “which offers free price checks on many collectibles.”

Hit the books. Start by checking out “general price guides,” which can often be found in local libraries. Two reliable sources are Judith Miller’s Collectibles Price Guide and Kovel’s Antiques & Collectible Price List.

Get it appraised, if you’ve got something good. An appraisal can cost “hundreds of dollars depending on the value of the item, but it’s worth it.” Choose an appraiser who specializes in your type of antique and “stick with members of leading professional groups” such as the American Society of Appraisers.
