A documentary about Earth’s closest neighbor
D

irect From the Moon

In September 2007, Japan launched its second lunar orbital spacecraft, Kaguya, to study the origins of the moon, map its surface, and lay the groundwork for a potential long-term lunar base. This documentary presents a vivid high-definition look at Earth’s closest neighbor using video beamed from the spacecraft, including a remarkable “Earth-rise” over the lunar horizon, reminiscent of the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who became the second man on the moon 40 years ago, comments on the images. In addition, NASA scientists discuss the feasibility of establishing a lunar outpost and show how it might function. Monday, Nov. 17, at 9 p.m., National Geographic Channel
