The word “genocide” did not exist until Raphael Lemkin, a lawyer of Polish-Jewish descent who lost dozens of relatives in the Holocaust, coined it in a 1944 book about the Nazis. Lemkin helped craft international law that he hoped would prevent genocide from ever occurring again. But it has occurred—under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, under Saddam Hussein in Iraq, in Bosnia, in Rwanda, and now in Darfur. Christiane Amanpour’s celebration of the largely unknown heroes who have “screamed bloody murder” for the international community to stop these human catastrophes marks the upcoming 60th anniversary of the U.N.’s convention against genocide.
