Allsportgps.com turns “almost any cell phone into a fully functioning GPS” navigator with a simple download. Its software can accurately track “distance, elevation, and running, hiking, and biking speeds.” Service costs $5.99 a month or $1.99 a day.

Allensportsusa.com/subpages/productsNew/gps/710feature.php offers software for your cell phone that “calls up 2-D and 3-D maps with pinpoint-accurate voice directions.” A one-time ­download costs a little more than $200.

Google.com/latitude lets mobile users “share their locations with their friends” via Google Maps. That sounds Orwellian, but Latitude is “completely opt-in”: Users can “choose who gets access and what level of information they can see.”
