1. Maryland mall shooting leaves three dead

A gunman opened fire in a crowded shopping mall in Columbia, Md., on Saturday, leaving three people dead and several more wounded. The suspect was among the victims. Howard County Police announced late Saturday that officers had located and disabled two "crude devices" in the gunman's belongings "that appeared to be an attempt at making explosives using fireworks." Police have tentatively identified the gunman but are not ready to publicly release his name. [USA Today]
