Oct. 9, 1869: President Ulysses S. Grant announced the death of former President Franklin Pierce. Pierce, whose presidency was remembered mostly for his failure to end the debate over slavery, had died the day before at his home in Concord, New Hampshire. Pierce is the only president to come from the Granite State.

Oct. 9, 1915: Woodrow Wilson became the first president to attend a World Series game.
