Aug. 8, 1974: President Richard Nixon announced he would resign the next day because of the Watergate scandal, becoming the only president to ever step down from office. He was replaced by Gerald Ford, who had been selected as vice president just 10 months before after Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned in a tax evasion scandal.

Aug. 8, 2001: President George W. Bush said the government would support federal funding of limited research on embryonic stem cells.
