Wendy Burton is interested in all that’s left behind. Over the past decade, the New York–based photographer has ushered viewers into abandoned homes, churches, and factories, building stories from human absence. Now she’s shifted her attention to the animal kingdom. For her two most recent series, Burton photographed animal skulls and abandoned birds’ nests, the latter found by scouring tree branches during her walks in upstate New York. In these images, each nest or skull is lit like a Dutch still life and strikes the eye as a small wonder of engineering and form. At Craig Krull Gallery, 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica, Calif., (310) 828-6410. Prices range from $1,500 to $5,000.
