This 2000 cult classic from Japan deserves to become “a mainstream must-see,” said EntertainmentWeekly.com. Its plot is “strikingly similar” to The Hunger Games’: Teens of the future are forced into a battle to the death. The violence is heavier here, though, and the setup generates “gonzo satire.”

Keira Knightley plays a troubled woman who comes between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) in this “elegant” period drama, said Salon.com. Director David Cronenberg adds “an erotic, psychoactive undertow” to a tale loaded with provocative ideas.

Director Fritz Lang and his actors were “working at the top of their games” in this “remarkably frank” 1945 film, said the New York Post. Edward G. Robinson stars as a middle-aged bank clerk who befriends a young woman. The story turns dark after he discovers she’s a prostitute out to con him.
