The video: A resourceful Japanese aquarium is using power generated by an electric eel to light its Christmas tree. (View clip below.) The fish — which generates up to 800 watts every time it moves inside a special tank outfitted with two aluminum electrode panels — has been fueling the facility's holiday tree for some years, but this December, it has a new friend: A Santa robot that aquarium visitors empower by stomping on a pad.
The reaction: Visiting this attraction must be like "spending the holiday at a James Bond villain's house!" says Sam Biddle at Gizmodo. Is this the "greatest aquarium in the world," or simply a prototype for some kind of "eel-based super weapon?" This, says Maggie Koerth-Baker at BoingBoing, is an "amazing holiday miracle."
