The video: Some critics are up in arms over the "outrageous" pro-immigration themes in Machete, the latest movie from Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez (watch trailer below). In the campy, ultra-violent film, a Texas senator (Robert de Niro) campaigning on a "rabid anti-immigration platform" clashes with a Mexican hitman (Danny Trejo) — provoking (spoiler alert!) a secret army of Mexican immigrants to rise up and slaughter Americans in a bloody civil war.
The reaction: "Who knew that Hollywood would blame everything that's gone wrong in Mexico on the 'Anglos'?" asks James P. Pinkerton at Fox News. Conservatives take note — "The Reconquista is here, at a theater near you." Actually, laughter may be the "appropriate response" to Machete's "gleefully inflammatory" pro-Mexican, anti-American stance, says Stephen Holden in The New York Times.
