After more than a year of invite-only beta testing, Google Voice is now open to the public. The free web service allows users to get all their calls through one permanent phone number. It also offers voicemail transcription "that works like email," free text messaging, reduced rates for international calls and conference calling. "Google Voice is a great service," says Larry Dignan in ZDNet. But I'm skeptical that the "average Joes and Jills" will be as keen on it as the tech-savvy "early adopter types."
