A heavy-metal band tries for a comeback.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil “feels like the lost sequel to This Is Spinal Tap,” said Elizabeth Weitzman in the New York Daily News. Except that Anvil, the focus of Sacha Gervasi’s “alternately funny, sad, and outrageous” documentary, is an actual band. This Canadian heavy-metal group, headed by singer Steve “Lips” Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, had a brush with fame in 1984 and has toiled in obscurity ever since. Through it all, Anvil “kept making records that did not sell, kept dreaming the rock-star dream,” said Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times. The “yearning, almost child-like enthusiasm” that Kudlow and Reiner bring to their work is the emotional core of the band—and of the film. As Gervasi chronicles Anvil’s “hilarious and unexpectedly moving” attempt at a 2007 comeback, you find yourself cheering these guys on, said Owen Gleiberman in Entertainment Weekly. Anvil! “understands that the ultimate measure of metal stardom is to remain a legend in your own mind.”
