Much has been written both against and in defense of the U.S. detention center at Guantánamo Bay, but little footage of the prison has ever been seen by the public at large. In August 2008, National Geographic’s Explorer was allowed a restricted yet still revealing three weeks within the grounds. The resulting two-hour documentary provides a rare glimpse of daily life at Gitmo, showing the daily battle of wills between detainees and detainers. Through interviews with administrators, guards, former prisoners, military and Bush administration personnel, and habeas corpus lawyers, the film attempts to present a balanced perspective on the controversial facility, slated to be shut down within a year.
