Martin Munkacsi: Vitality
Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York

As a fashion photographer, Martin Munkacsi was decades ahead of his time. But the Hungarian artist, who immigrated to America in the 1930s, also produced formally innovative compositions that are just as dynamic and original as anything created by his avant-garde contemporaries. Some pictures’ radical tilts and sharp geometry make them seem like stills from one of Sergei Eisenstein’s Soviet-era films. Others might be tanned, Riviera versions of Leni Riefenstahl’s Aryan icons. But Munkacsi’s images carry a jolt no propaganda can match—sheer exuberance in the experience of life.
