Robert Mapplethorpe
Mark Selwyn Fine Art
Los Angeles

Robert Mapplethorpe’s sadomasochistic photographs stirred controversy in the late 1980s. But by then he had mostly abandoned such themes, and also began to deeply explore a fascination with ancient Greek statuary. In addition to photographs of actual statues, this exhibition presents the polished—and surprisingly demure—nudes inspired by them. The lithe women and muscular men occasionally suggest an almost frightening obsession with physical perfection. But you see the effect Mapplethorpe was after in a finely etched black-and-white image such as Chest, Thomas (1986), whose closely cropped subject displays fine veins that really do resemble marbling. 6222 Wilshire Blvd., (323) 933-9911. Through March 28. Prices range from $10,000 to $160,000.
