The fascinating individuals interviewed in this briskly edited hour have risen to prominence in a wide range of fields—from politics to show business to religion to music—and all have African-American heritage. They include Bishop Barbara C. Harris (a “cradle Episcopalian” who grew up “spoiling for a fight”); maverick filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles (“I’m just your basic upstart loner”); activist academic Angela Davis, who speaks frankly about being hunted by the FBI; and RZA of hip-hop’s Wu-Tang Clan, who is equally candid about growing up in “the ’hood” (“I couldn’t wait to get out of there”).
