Lucien Clergue: The Intimate Picasso
Louis Stern Fine Arts
West Hollywood, Calif.

In his two-decade friendship with Pablo Picasso, Lucien Clergue had the rare chance to photograph the legendary painter in surprisingly casual moments. Some snapshots here are so casual they almost seem sloppy. But the best images capture Picasso playing to the crowd at bullfights, or sitting like a potentate amid the beloved artworks and half-finished projects at La Californie, his villa in Cannes, France. The irascible Spaniard here seems accessibly avuncular; did he allow his young friend to photograph him because he knew the pictures would present him in the best light? Such psychological speculation fascinates, even when the pictures don’t.
