Nick Cave: Recent Soundsuits
Jack Shainman Gallery
New York

The artist Nick Cave is not the same man as the musician Nick Cave. But fans of the Australian rocker’s quirky songs might also appreciate this Chicago artist’s quirky “Soundsuits.” Looking like anthropological artifacts from some alien culture, these patchwork costumes are built of materials—from beads to twigs to salvaged fabric scraps—meant to make noise when rubbed against one another. Their full effect can’t be appreciated until you’ve seen (and heard) the artist dance around in them. But their motley colors and textures provide a jarring and enjoyable visual equivalent. Prices: $45,000 each. 513 W. 20th, St., (212) 645-1701. Through Feb. 7.
