Tina Fey’s running impersonation of Sarah Palin has been a national sensation, says Damian Holbrook in TV Guide, but she had to be talked into doing it. “When I first saw her, I didn’t think we looked alike at all,” the actress and comedy writer says. “She’s got these super-straight white teeth and she’s got this really even caramel tan. She’s got legs for days.” After watching the Republican vice presidential nominee on TV for a while, Fey says, “I had to admit there’s something there.” Still, when Saturday Night Live came calling, Fey was hesitant. “I’m not an impressionist. I’m barely even a sketch player anymore.” To make the impression work, she studied Palin closely, picking up little verbal and physical tics. The makeup people glued down her ears, and made her lips appear fuller. Despite widespread raves for the impression, Fey feels she didn’t quite nail the sound of Palin’s voice or her super-confident manner. After meeting the Alaska governor in person, when she appeared on SNL, Fey has also concluded she doesn’t look much like Palin after all. “I’ll tell you, that lady is five times better-looking than I am. She’s 44? She’s got none of that droopy s---. She’s keeping it tight!”
