Junko Yoda: Shadows of the Clouds
Zabriskie Gallery, New York
Junko Yoda’s new paintings draw their inspiration from a sight familiar to any airplane passenger: the shadows of clouds as they scoot across the ground far below. A feeling of ephemerality pervades these paintings, whose intricately mottled backgrounds are given texture with bits of rice paper. By comparison, the clouds floating above seem jarringly cartoonish, and Yoda’s large paintings can drift toward incoherence. Yet small works, most with anonymous titles such as S7 or S11, have the tension and spontaneity of a good drawing. 41 E. 57th St., through Oct. 18. Prices range from $4,000 to $20,000.
