35% of Americans say they plan to spend less on holiday gifts this year than they did last year—the highest percentage to profess such pessimism in eight years. Most of those cutting back blamed higher gas and heating-oil costs or an erosion in their personal finances. 15% say they plan to spend more than last year, while 47% say they’ll spend about the same.
