Charity of the week
The late choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey is credited with revolutionizing the role of African-American performers in contemporary dance. His legacy lives on today through the company he founded, which has grown into the larger Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation (alvinailey.org). This umbrella organization supports the two Alvin Ailey dance companies, which regularly perform across the country, and the prestigious Ailey School, which trains 3,500 aspiring artists and dance enthusiasts each year. AileyCamp offers young people ages 11–14 a summer camp experience where they can learn popular dance styles such as jazz, ballet, and West African, and build self-confidence and communication skills. During the school year, the organization partners with local groups to make classes and community dance experiences possible in middle schools across the country.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
