Charity of the week
When corporations exploit the natural resources of a developing nation, citizens often have few means to legally protect themselves and their families. EarthRights International (earthrights.org) is an NGO that uses the power of law to defend human rights and the environment. The organization’s threepronged approach involves teaching local leaders to defend their communities’ resources, running campaigns to expose and prevent earth rights abuses, and taking corporations to court. EarthRights works primarily in Southeast Asia, South America, and th e U.S. Legal victories include a landmark lawsuit against a gas pipeline in Burma, which villagers were forced to work on by the military junta, and winning settlements for Nigerians affected by a violent crackdown on environmental activists.
