Charity of the week
For children with a lifethreatening illness, time away from the hospital can make a world of difference. Founded in 1984, Camp Sunshine (campsunshine.org), located on Maine’s tranquil Sebago Lake, provides relaxing, no-cost retreats that combine recreation and respite for the families of children dealing with severe health issues. The program_is the only one in the nation that offers year-round recreation designed to serve the entire family of a sick child. Campgoers enjoy various activities—such as swimming, kayaking, and mini golf, or snowshoeing, iceskating, and sledding, depending on the season—with a full staff of aides on-site to offer medical and emotional support. Families who have recently lost children to illness are also included in the retreats. Since its inception, Camp Sunshine has hosted more than 48,900 individuals from 49 states and 27 countries.
