Charity of the week
The International Crane Foundation savingcranes.org works to conserve crane populations around the world and protect the wetland ecosystems that the birds call home. Since its inception in 1973, the organization has focused on ensuring that conservation efforts benefit both crane populations and local citizens’ livelihoods. Much of the group’s work is in East Asia, home to eight species of cranes, five of which are threatened. Development has put intense pressure on the region’s water resources, and the organization works with local conservation officials to keep crane populations healthy by securing chains of wetlands where the birds live and nest. The group also works to limit the black market in cranes, by helping to strengthen local laws and drawing attention to the trade in illegally captured and sold birds.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
