Innovation of the week
“If you’re looking to move but can’t find the house of your dreams, you may be able to just print out what you’re after in the near future,” said Mike Murphy in Qz.com. Startup Apis Cor can build almost an entire small house in less than 24 hours using a massive 3-D printer. The hulking device, “which looks more like a small crane than a conventional 3-D printer,” quickly lays down concrete walls, after which contractors install insulation, windows, a roof, and appliances. The company, which has offices in San Francisco and Russia, just completed its first residential property—“a cozy but livable 400-square-foot house”—in the town of Stupino, some 70 miles south of Moscow. Apis Cor says the studio-style home (above) was built and furnished for about $10,000; the biggest expenses were the doors and windows.
