▪ A Northern Arizona University student had her grade reduced on an English paper for using the term “mankind” rather than a gender-neutral alternative. Cailin Jeffers appealed, saying the term clearly refers to all people. Her professor, Dr. Anne Scott, countered that it is “sexist” and “doe s not mean ‘all people’ to all people.” She urged Jeffers to “look beyond her preset ideologies” and resubmit the paper.
▪ A Pennsylvania businessman who voted for Donald Trump says he has to hire immigrants because too many native-born workers take drugs. Sterling Technologies president Craig Quigley says that about 20 percent of local applicants fail drug tests, forcing him to hire immigrants, including Syrian refugees, “to fill the void.” Quigley says he’d gladly hire more Americans, but only if they “get off drugs.”
