Hotel of the week
The Cardinal Hotel
You can now rest your head in the 1929 skyscraper that served as a model for the Empire State Building, said Jennifer Rainey Marquez in Atlanta magazine. Built as the headquarters of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, the 22-story “art deco masterpiece” today houses a whimsically stylish Kimpton hotel whose 174 guest rooms take visual cues from menswear, meaning lots of navy, pinstripes, and leather. Kimpton hotels are “designed with fun in mind,” though, so don’t be surprised that the basement hides a bowling alley, a basketball court, and even an adult-size spiral slide. thecardinalhotel.com; doubles from $144.
