▪ A New Jersey congressman targeted a local political activist by sending a letter to her boss, forcing her to resign. Saily Avelenda, a bank executive, was called on the carpet for her work for a progressive activist group, which Republican U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen described as an “organized force” that threatened “national security.” He “used his name and used his position to try to punish me,” Avelenda said.
▪ Harvard University will host its first schoolwide graduation ceremony for African-American students. “Black Commencement 2017” is open to graduate and undergraduate students of color, who will wear African stoles over their gowns. The event is “not about segregation,” said student organizer Michael Huggins, but a celebration of “Harvard black excellence and brilliance.”
