Boring but important
Increase in temporary worker visas
The Department of Homeland Security announced this week that it would expand the number of visas available to temporary foreign workers by 15,000 for the remainder of the year—a 45 percent bump in the number normally issued. H-2B visas are used for low-wage, seasonal workers in the tourism, landscaping, and construction industries, and businesses have complained that the tight labor market has made recruiting difficult. Roughly 66,000 H-2B visas are offered to temporary workers each year, with 33,000 available for the summer season. Eligible businesses must show that they will suffer a financial loss if they aren’t allowed to hire foreign workers. President Trump has used H-2B visas to hire workers at his golf clubs and at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
