Show of the week
The wait is finally over for those who’ve been anticipating a screen adaptation of Caleb Carr’s blockbuster 1994 novel. For everybody too young to remember the book, the title character is Laszlo Kreizler, a psychiatrist practicing his suspect trade in 1896 Manhattan when he takes up the hunt for a serial killer targeting child prostitutes. Daniel Brühl, Dakota Fanning, and Luke Evans co-star in the 10-episode series, which gets the elaborate period set that the novel demands and takes as much ghoulish pleasure as Carr did in playing with antiquated ways of thinking.
