Charity of the week
Students from low-income communities are five times less likely to graduate college than those with more affluent backgrounds. Recognizing that middle school can be a make-or-break period for future academic success, Breakthrough Collaborative (breakthroughcollaborative.org) works to close the achievement and resource gap for youth in underserved middle schools across the country. Every summer, the organization offers a six-week study camp for rising seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-graders to prepare them for high school and college. Students work on core subjects such as math, science, and writing; take electives; and learn study habits that are critical for success. Throughout high school, they continue to receive guidance and mentorship. More than three-quarters of students participating in Breakthrough’s programs go on to attend college.
