Charity of the week
Children in low-income households who aren’t literate by third grade are 13 times less likely to graduate high school than their more well-off peers. Understanding that early literacy is a key to success, Literacy Inc. (lincnyc.org) works with elementary schools and community centers to develop a love for reading in high-need neighborhoods around New York City. In partnership with schools, the charity pairs older students with kindergartners through second-graders to have weekly read-aloud sessions. It also trains parents to implement LINC reading activities in their community and to support reading at home. Finally, LINC holds community reading events at local libraries and parks. LINC serves more than 8,000 children each year, and its programs have helped to increase reading rates in participants’ homes by 20 percent.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
