Deaths now outnumber births among white people in 26 states, up from 17 states just two years ago. The white population of the country actually declined slightly last year.

Environmental Protection Agency director Scott Pruitt sent only one email to anyone outside the agency during his first 10 months on the job, raising suspicions among watchdog groups that he is communicating in private with industry groups to avoid scrutiny. The EPA says that Pruitt mainly holds discussions in person and over the phone. Pruitt installed a $43,000 soundproof booth in his office last year.
Americans own about 46 percent of the 857 million civilian-owned firearms in the world, despite making up 4 percent of the world’s population, according to a new report from the international Small Arms Survey. The U.S. has more guns than citizens, with an estimated 120.5 guns for every 100 residents. The nation with the second-highest firearm ownership rate, war-torn Yemen, has 52.8 guns per 100 residents.

Two-thirds of the 133 nursing homes run by the Department of Veterans Affairs scored worse than their private-sector counterparts last year on a majority of key quality indicators, including rates of infection and decline of daily living skills. Sixty VA nursing homes received the agency’s own lowest quality ranking.
