Beer: Best of the local heroes
America’s budget-friendly regional beers still deserve a special place in hometown hearts, said Aaron Goldfarb in the online cocktail magazine Punch. Though few are locally brewed or locally owned anymore, the best simply taste better than the big national brands.
Schaefer The “runaway top choice” of our panel in a showdown of 15 brands, Brooklyn-born Schaefer “pours soft and creamy” and delivers “distinct grain notes and a savory umami quality.”
Pabst Blue Ribbon The hipster fave, brewed in Milwaukee, can now be found everywhere, “and we would say, deservedly so.” It’s “clean and grainy with a sweet maltiness.”
Genesee Cream Ale Still brewed in Rochester, N.Y., “Genny Cream” stands out for its “sheer drinkability.” It’s “yeasty with a touch of green pear and apple.”
