Charity of the week
American Humane (AmericanHumane.org) has long been at the forefront of national efforts to protect animals from abuse and neglect. The organization has rescued animals of every kind in almost every major disaster relief effort since World War I, including after Pearl Harbor, the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and Superstorm Sandy in New York and New Jersey, and in Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. In the past 12 years alone, it has saved, helped, and sheltered more than 80,000 animals. American Humane also runs a rigorous certification program that helps consumers choose dairy, eggs, and meat from farms where animals are treated humanely. And the charity works to nurture the bond between humans and animals, training qualified shelter dogs to become service dogs for veterans with PTSD.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
