Charity of the week
Nearly two-thirds of families who have lost a member during active-duty military service struggle financially, and 41 percent of children from these families do not graduate from college. Though government programs do offer financial assistance for veterans’ children, it is not nearly enough to cover all educational expenses. The mission of the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (fallenpatriots.org) is to bridge this financial aid gap by providing college scholarships to children who have lost a parent. Every year, the foundation awards $6,250 to each student to help cover the costs of tuition, room and board, transportation, and other living expenses. Since 2002, the foundation has given over $22 million in scholarships to more than 1,000 students nationwide, with 95 percent of graduating students leaving school debt-free.
