Author of the week
Glennon Doyle Melton
Author Glennon Doyle Melton is becoming an endless font of surprises, said Ellen McCarthy in The Washington Post. In her best-selling new memoir, Love Warrior, the 40-year-old Florida blogger and mother of three shares an in-depth account of her husband’s serial infidelity— which until last week was one of the few aspects of her personal life that she hadn’t fully laid bare to her 7 million weekly readers. Her blog, Momastery, first went viral several years ago on the strength of her talk of how “helluva hard” it is to be a mother raising young kids. Melton’s posts turned out to be just as candid about her history of bulimia and alcoholism, about where she finds God, and about how great her husband is. But even Love Warrior’s dramatic revelations don’t bring Melton’s followers fully up to date.
The book is about the wrenching process of putting a marriage back together, and in that story, the marriage survives. A month before publication, though, Melton announced that she was leaving her husband of 15 years for good. “Sometimes,” she wrote, “no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot fit into your old life anymore.” In a way, it’s apt that Melton now will be out on a book tour with a messy story to share, said Heidi Stevens in the Chicago Tribune. “I’m used to going out all busted up,” she says. “It’s where I’m most comfortable.” She has stood up, after all, against false fronts, and even against going public with a personal struggle only when it’s over. “Maybe this all happened to me,” she says, “so I can go out there and be seen in the during.”
