In a ceremony at 10 a.m. this morning, the Confederate flag will be permanently removed from the South Carolina statehouse grounds. The flag has flown outside the Capitol for more than half a century. Its removal comes less than a month after a gunman with an apparent history of white supremacism allegedly shot and killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, fueling a nationwide backlash against the Confederate flag. Gov. Nikki Haley (R), who led the legislative push to remove the flag, signed a bill into law yesterday setting the stage for today's removal.
