In a rare piece of good news for Democrats, they have retained the Nevada seat being vacated by retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.

With 70 percent of precincts reporting, Democratic nominee Catherine Cortez Masto, a former state attorney general, has 49 percent of the vote against Republican Rep. Joe Heck's 44 percent. Cortez Masto has been projected as the winner by media organizations such as The Associated Press and NBC News.

This had been the only Senate seat in which Democrats were actively playing defense.
