An investigation by RealClearPolitics is raising questions about whether Donald Trump illegally used money from the Donald J. Trump Foundation to promote his political goals. Trump used at least $286,000 from the foundation's funds between 2011 and 2014 to donate to conservative or policy groups, and "in many cases, this flow of money corresponded to prime speaking slots or endorsements that aided Trump as he sought to recast himself as a plausible Republican candidate for president," RealClearPolitics writes. While Trump likely didn't ask for favors outright, he may have purposely made himself a friendly face to influential conservative groups. If the donations were found to be "made solely for Trump’s benefit," they would be in violation of federal self-dealing laws. Trump has reportedly not donated to his own foundation since 2008; other donors' contributions make up the large share of the funds.
